Stu Holden is roughly two-and-a-half years older than his brother Euan. Both are footballers and both play for teams in Lancashire. In fact, their two teams' grounds are less than 15 miles away from each other. Because their respective commutes to work are so short, the two share a flat. Now, as if seeing each other every day wasn't enough for the two brothers, they are set to face off against each other later today in a reserve clash.
Just a week ago, Euan Holden signed non-contract terms with Bury FC. He had previously made 34 appearances for non-league Stockport County before having his contract cancelled by mutual consent a month ago. Holden was a regular for County during the 2011/12 season but managed only one appearance during the first half of this season. It only took a month for him to sign on with the Shakers.
Stu, on the other hand, is still making his way to full fitness after a long-term injury and even longer-term setback. He has played in competitive matches recently but only for a total of 25 minutes over two games. As a result, most of the action that Stu Holden has seen has come in the form of reserve games. He played just over 30 minutes before an injury scare forced him off against Manchester City's reserves and then completed a full 90 minutes in a closed-door game the week after.
Euan was drafted by Houston Dynamo in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft with the 62nd pick and almost immediately signed for Danish side Vejle Boldklub. Stu had already left the club at that point.
They will now meet up on the pitch in a professional capacity for the first time as Bolton Wanderers welcome Bury to the County Ground for their Manchester FA Senior Cup clash. The fixture was originally supposed to be played on 17 December, 2012 and was scheduled to be Holden's first reserve match following a lengthy injury layoff. Unfortunately for Holden and Bolton, the County Ground's pitch was waterlogged following heavy rainfall on the day.
The weather forecast is all clear and chances of precipitations are minimal. We'll be sure to let you know how the brothers got on.
Update: Bury have named their starting lineup and Euan will be on from the beginning. Bolton have done the same and Stu will start for the Trotters.
